The College Football Playoffs for this past CFB season are underway, starting on New Year’s Eve. We had the reigning champs face off against the playoff Cinderella team, the Miami Hurricanes. Then, to start the new year, Oregon faced off against Texas Tech. Then Alabama and Indiana made history in that matchup. finishing off the day, we saw Georgia and Ole Miss face off. Let’s take a deep dive into each matchup and discuss the remainder of the bracket.
Miami Vs OSU started slow with no scoring in the first quarter, but to open up the scoring was a Carson Beck TD throw to Mark Fletcher, who finished the game with 90 yards. The next score would come on the very next drive when Julian Sayin, a Heisman finalist, would drop back and try to hit a screen pass to his left, but what awaited him was a running Keionte Scott, a Hurricane defensive back who had read the play, he intercepted Sayin’s pass and took it all the way into the endzone to make the score 14-0
Bo Jackson would find the endzone in the 3rd quarter to cut the deficit to 7 before Miami would extend the lead to 10 with a field goal. Sayin would find Jeremiah Smith, who would run into the endzone to cut the deficit to 3, then Chamar Brown would ice the game with a rushing TD. Sayin would try to help the Buceyes playoff hopes, but would, in the words of Pat Macafee, “Sayin throws a punt” interception back to Miami so that Beck could take 1 final snap and kneel out the clock.
The Oregon Ducks would pick up a huge win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders, 23-0. The MVP of this game was Freshman DB Brandon Finney, who had 2 INTs and a fumble recovery. Dante Moore had 230 yards and 1 INT in a defensive game.
Indiana played a game against Alabama, and the Tide forgot to show up; Indiana won 38-3. QB Fernando Mendoza only had 16 passes and 14 completions, for only 190 yards. Mendoza had 3 TD passes and only 2 incompletions in a dominant win, the Heisman winner showing all the haters that he deserved the award.
The Georgia Bulldogs narrowly lost to the Kiffenless Ole Miss squad. Trinidad Chambliss had a career day with 360 passing yards and 3 TDs for the Rebels. Kewan Lacy had just under 100 yards on the ground and had 2 rushing scores. The game was won on 2 different plays. Once the game was leading field goal to go up 37-34, the Bulldogs tried to return the kickoff would lateral the ball into the endzone for a safety. The final score would be 39-34.
Next week, the 2 Semifinal matchups will be Miami Vs Ole Miss, and Indiana vs Oregon. If you would like to hear my and my dad’s opinions on the games, listen to our podcast here. I am extremely excited to see who will be playing in the CFP National Championship.
